On Friday, August 9, the United Way of East Central Iowa and Cedar Rapids Curling teamed up to host Sweeping for Change at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Teams from area businesses spent the day learning about the sport of curling and competing for a traveling trophy. World curling champion and four time Olympian, Debbie McCormick, helped raise additional funds by being auctioned off to play on one of the competing teams. Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC’s team, the Simmons Sweepers, finished in 4th place. Team members included attorneys Abe Carls and Crystal Pound and summer associates Joe Porter, Madison Schroeder and Rebekah Jalilian-Nosraty.

Phil Burian, member at Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC and President of Cedar Rapids Curling, states, “The event is a great way to incorporate the inclusive and social nature of curling with United Way’s mission of raising funds and building relationships to improve the community.” Phil is grateful to the many Cedar Rapids curling volunteers who took time off work to make this such a successful and fun event. This was the third year Sweeping for Change was held and Phil looks forward to seeing the event continue to grow.

Cedar Rapids Curling is also excited to be partnering with the City of Cedar Rapids, VenuWorks, the Cedar Rapids Tourism Office and USA Curling to showcase the best curlers in the country at the USA Curling National Championships in February 2021. KCRG shared details for this event, here.
