Attorney Eric Langston will be recognized at the 2019 Gazette Business Awards for his involvement in Linn County’s Expungement and Employment Barriers Resource Clinic. He is one of the three individual honorees being recognized, along with 17 organizational honorees, at the ceremony on Tuesday, October 29 at The Hotel at Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids. In July, Mr. Langston worked synergistically with Iowa Legal Aid and other partners to deliver life-changing legal assistance to people seeking to turn their lives around and finally put their past behind them.  Serving 150 people, the clinic doubled the previous state record and provided additional services, such as having an attorney present to negotiate payment plans on old government debts with the sheriff so as to allow the client to obtain a driver’s license again.  Also, a wide variety of social service organizations partnered with our efforts to have a delegate present to do initial outreach and intake with the clients.  Together, this allows clients to more easily obtain employment by not facing issues of disclosing expungable criminal offenses, by reinstating their ability to obtain a driver’s license, and by connecting them with the social service organization more tailored to meet their particular needs.
